“An accursed race, a race utterly alienated from God, a generation forsooth which has not directed its heart and has not entrusted its spirit to God…” -Pope Urban II’s call for the crusades, France, Clermont, November 1095
There is one thing I respect Pastor James McConnell for, and that is that, like Pope Urban II, he is honest about his position on Islam and Muslims. Not a wolf in sheep’s clothing like the neocons who, in their attacks on the fundamentals of Islam, employ brown-faced, pseudo-intellectuals and “experts” to play linguistic gymnastics with Islam and concoct terms like “Islamism” in order to prevent allegations of intolerance against Islam. As though Islam is play dough as opposed to a religion of a people approaching 2 billion in number.
To recap, the Pastor stated that,
“Islam is heathen, Islam is satanic, Islam is a doctrine spawned in hell,”
“Enoch Powell was a prophet, he called it that blood would flow on the streets and it has happened”
It is interesting to note the citing of former Conservative MP Enoch Powell’s “Rivers of blood” speech. It was against the backdrop of the Labour government’s Race Relations Bill, which the Conservatives had considerably weakened through their proposed amendments. The speech was given in lamentation of the possibility of the “black man holding the whip over the white man”. In short, it was a bigoted speech from a man who feared equality with members of other races and religions.
Telling for Pastor McConnell and Peter Robinson, the Democratic Unionist Party first minister, who, in a demonstration of extreme discrimination, states that he only trusts “Muzzies” to run his errands.
This sickeningly pervasive attitude against Islam and its adherents is a manifestation of the continued right-wing fascist rhetoric, now sprinkled with “Christianism”, mainly imported from the US with the influence coming from Robert Spencer et al, and given credence by the penny-pinching Maryam Namazies, Douglas Murrays and the neocon Henry Jackson Societys of the UK’s media and political landscape. And whilst the rise of “Christianism“, a political assertion of Christianity like that espoused by Jack Straw and David Cameron, tied with extremism of the sort demonstrated by EDL, Britain First and now Pastor McConnell and Robinson, is continually ignored by the neocon government, Muslims are spotlighted, smeared, attacked, gagged, harassed, and subjected to public/private surveillance en masse. With the discriminatory prejudice in the UK on the increase and the violations against the Muslim minority growing, so are failings of the UK Government. The UK Government is blindly continuing its discriminatory policies and is inactive in countering the tide of the growing prejudice against Islam, and its adherents.
Will there be a “conveyor-belt to terrorism” theory established as truth, which starts with neocon policies, goes through “radical preachers” like Pastor McConnell and Peter Robinson, moves onto associations with the EDL and Britain First and ends with “Christianist”/far right terrorists like Anders Breivik, Pavlo Lapshyn and Ian Forman?
In accordance with international norms, the UK Government needs to establish policies which target this right-wing extremism. I, as does the UN Human Rights Council Resolution 16/18 (which the UK Government claims it is fully committed to), are concerned about
…actions that wilfully exploit tensions or target individuals on the basis of their religion or belief,
and calls on the UK Government to,
[Speak] …out against intolerance, including advocacy of religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence;
The UK Government needs to give an account of it failings.
