No Outsiders explicates themes around transgenderism and gender deconstruction to young children. Much of the discussion and concerns of parents have glossed over this topic under the catch all “LGBT” acronym.

Transgenderism has become prominent in recent years, rapidly becoming a battleground for the culture wars between the left and the right along with mini battles taking place between Catholics and transgenders, Anglicans and the left, and the left and the left. It is all a bit of a mess.

Muslims are being pulled into this political discussion through CVE/deform Islam discourses, and as the previous part of this article shows, No Outsiders is thoroughly embedded in this demonising framework.

It is important for Muslims to therefore forge their own understanding around this issue using the moral foundations of their faith before examining what Moffat is preaching.

In a world dominated by a fast-paced environments denoted by the maximisation of profits, the tendency to enter into “cruise-control” upon the pathway of life is inevitable. The often spiritually devoid nature can take its toll. For Muslims, the month of Ramadan operates as the nudge which forces the Muslim psyche to recognise the spiritual state and take steps through the obligatory fasting (sawm) and associated worship to reform the soul.

Sawm is not just merely a ritual; it’s an obligation which is central to Islam to the extent that it is referred to as a pillar of this religion. To unshackle the understanding of modernity imposed upon Islam, it is not simply a ritual relegated to the private sphere but operates as an act which imbues the soul with Islamic morality which is defined by its quality of transcendentalism – i.e. its implications are not limited to the temporal but far more importantly, beyond the ephemeral. For a believer it is sine qua non for the purposes of discharging one of the most fundamental obligations in Islam.

Recent reports however, have taken to delegitimising fasting in the month of Ramadan in the context of schools.

Islam is Not the Problem, Neoconservatism is.

A report commissioned by 5Pillarsuk.com reveals some interesting insights into the beliefs and views of Muslims in Britain.  One hundred and fifty “influential” Muslim respondents across the Islamic spectrum were queried. The results demonstrate a problematic curve ball for neoconservatives and their endless efforts to target Islam and Muslims.

The questions revolved around normative Islamic beliefs, and across the board a generally high level of agreement with these beliefs was achieved. Participants rebutted dominant propaganda against Islam and Muslims. For instance, 100% agreed or strongly agreed that forced marriages are forbidden, and 100% agreed or strongly agreed that British Muslims are an “integral part of the UK”. It also established a high rate of agreement upon those beliefs and practices which are typically attacked by politicians in concert with the media, analysts and commentators:

  • Segregation of men and women in closed public, or religious settings – over 80% agreed or strongly agreed
  • There is no compulsion in Islam, no one can be forced to become Muslim – over 95% agreed/strongly agreed
  • Hijab is an obligation in Islam – over 95% agreed or strongly agreed
  • Niqab is a legitimate piece of Islamic clothing – over 90% agreed or strongly agreed (chart 16 is somewhat unclear)
  • Islam is a holistic comprehensive way of life – over 97% agreed or strongly agreed
  • Jihad as is mandated in the Qur’an is used to maintain or restore order, peace and security or to remove oppression and injustice – over 95% agreed or strongly agreed.

ISB’s Dangerous Liasons and Usama Hasan’s Neocon Clique-Endorsed Fatwa

My previous articles (here and here) on ISB and the deconstruction of Islam project highlighted the dangers of organisations like ISB which propagate a dumbed-down version of Islam suitably fitting a neocon narrative.

The ISB “luminaries” and others platformed by them who have an agenda to serve their neocon paymasters at the expense of the Muslim minority of Britain has led to an Islam re-engineering industry which seeks to undermine classical scholarship and Islamic orthodoxy through promotion of confusion, selective textual analyses and rendering of sources of Islamic law “weak” or “ambiguous”.

It was highlighted in the previous piece on ISB that perhaps it was the monochromatising of the Colour of Allah producing an insipid Islam tainted with post-modernist deconstructionism which prevented them from issuing a supportive position on the brutal massacre of Palestinians in Gaza.  The articulation of usual excuses of “not in our remit” rhetoric by reformationists like Dilwar Hussain and others as their consciousness struggled to reconcile themselves with the catastrophe in Gaza, came forth. A simple position on Palestine and Gaza against the Zionist entity was tip-toed around and even a drafting of a statement was kicked about by ISB members.

It is perhaps the same “flavour” (to use ISB lingo) of British Islam which has now freely allowed ISB to take a formal stance on the admittedly insane, neocon policy-pretext-perfect ISIS. In a letter drafted by the continually devolving Usama Hasan, the dime-a-piece “scholar” at Quilliam Foundation, key individuals and organisations put their names to calls to ISIS leader for him to desist from his actions.

ISB and the Reformation Discourse

My last article seems to have caused unsettlement amongst some quarters it seems.  I was attacked for not verifying my information before “judging” people, although, my article refutes the statements made by brother Ahtsham Ali.  Some have labelled me a “deobandit”, whilst others have called me a “wobbler”, whilst another thought it was some “brillo”.  Ironic, to say the least, considering those who have made such claims failed to verify such “labels” themselves and “judged” me.  For the record, I have defended Sufis and Salafis.  My position is simple, I will defend Muslims where the attacker is using the Muslim as a proxy to attack Islam.  Hence, I have defended Shaykh Haytham al-Haddad, spoke highly of Shaykh Ibrahim Osi-Efa and written in defence of individuals who associate themselves with ISB and in so doing have established a track record of a non-sectarianist position.

ISB and reformation

As evident from the polished ISB website parading “British Islam” as increasingly clean-shaven jaw-bones and hijab-less heads, the Islam of ISB provides for a flavour which, in its endeavour to appeal to the masses of the British public, reduces Islam to insipidity, a shapeless gas which takes any form of its container and monochroming the Colour of Allah (al-Qur’an 2:139) which signifies Islam’s uniqueness, demarcating its own epistemological paradigm.

The platform speakers of ISB, to varying degrees, seek to deconstruct this colour, and through this deconstruction perpetuate confusion amongst people who will adopt a position more suited to their desires.  Some balked at my comparison of this with the neocon agenda to deconstruct Islam, however the reading of the RAND corporation policy in “democratising Islam”, and the creation and actions of Radical Middleway for instance, to forge as part of British policy, a dumbed down version of Islam are testimony to this reductionist Islam being propounded.

The methodology employed is through the use of not modernism, but postermodernist decontructionism; i.e. that no one can monopolise the “truth” and that traditional assumptions, however established are merely constructed meanings. As such interpretations become open (Quilliam anyone?).

A quaint philosophy except that its application to Islam ignores the fact that the process of verification based upon unshakeable foundations and principles has been occurring for over 1400 years by thousands of individuals whose piety is unparalleled today.

I do not doubt ISB’s former president, Ahtsham Ali’s sincerity in his research, lectures and propagation. However there are some serious issues which reveal this underlying issue of deconstruction in his discourses, which contain a mixture of dangerous advice and in some cases inaccurate, misleading statements. This concoction then allows for the doors for reformation of Islam to be flung open, not in minor issues, but issues which would attack the very fundamentals of Islam, as Usama Hasan (who is defended by ISB) has already done.
