What did you learn at Rockwood Academy Today, Dear Little Boy of Mine?

What did you learn in school today,
Dear little boy of mine?
I learned our government must be strong.
It’s always right and never wrong.
Our leaders are the finest men.
And we elect them again and again.
That’s what I learned in school today.
That’s what I learned in school.

What did you learn in school today,
Dear little boy of mine?
I learned that war is not so bad.
I learned of the great ones we have had.
We fought in Germany and in France.
And some day I might get my chance.
That’s what I learned in school today.
That’s what I learned in school.

~ A satirical protest song by Tom Paxton, 1963

Tahir Alam Issues Public Response to Banning Order

The former governor of Park View Educational Trust has issued a public response to a draconian banning order issued by Nicky Morgan. The undeniably political nature of the ban needs to be made the subject of judicial scrutiny, as the basis of the ban remains obscure and spurious upon analysis. Regardless of whether a court would exonerate Alam (and evidence of a structurally discriminatory judiciary impacted by anti-Muslim xenophobia exists), the fact remains the Department for Education and the rest of the politicised arms of the State (see here and here) remain comparatively lethargic or even non-existent when it comes to dealing with “extremist” traits in the Orthodox Jewish community (see here, here, here and here), or indeed in tackling allegations of “Christianist plots” to takeover “secular” state schools (see herehere and here).

“Jihadist” School Takeover Plot Round 3: A Governor’s Defence of Park View School and the Pretext to Erode Liberties

The “Jihadist takeover plot”, which has since downgraded in threat level to “Islamist takeover plot” and is currently at level “Islamic takeover plot” is taking quite an interesting turn. Listening to Gilligan on radio a few days ago, I heard him confidently defend his report and stated that there were “huge numbers” of people who had come to him complaining about the takeover by “Islamists” at Park View School.  He highlighted that they were holding prayers at the school and allowing prayers to be done on Friday and this was an enforcement on non-Muslims “however few they maybe”.

Listening to this man I could read through his deflection tactics. Questions ran through my mind,

“Who are these swathes of people running to their white saviour that is Gilligan? Are they willing to testify without anonymity?  Does his biased reporting in the past against Muslims have anything to do with it, especially as closer to his home Jewish schools are dishing out corporal punishment? And is praying at school really a problem?”

If it is forced upon the students then perhaps it is an issue but from my research this was not the case.  What really accentuates his clear anti-Muslim bigotry is the fact that I went to a Church of England public school.  And I would hold, with the full support of teachers amongst whom was a priest, congregational prayers for the mid-day and mid-afternoon prayers for fellow students who wanted to pray. We would even have Islamic circles in our breaks!  Islamist Church of England school? Hear hear!

Jihadist School Takeover Plot Round 2: Gilligan and the Neocon Narrative

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
 (Al-Qur’an, 49:6)

In Islam we have a clear principle when we receive news. The above verse of the Qur’an outlines this principle. The exegetes of the Qur’an have indicated that the application of this verse is in the general, therefore it is applicable in the case of anyone bringing you news.  The watermark of veracity increases the more questionable the individual is.

Which bring us to a particularly notorious individual who claims to be a journalist: Andrew Gilligan.  Gilligan was a true journalist once upon a time, underscoring the necessity of the free press. He exposed the “sexing up” of the dossier which led to the Iraq invasion.

In recent years however, he has attacked the Muslim minority in any way he can.  The tactics employed include distorting the facts of a report, and compulsively lying (there is so much on this guy I have just linked a search for “Andrew Gilligan” on the Islamophobia Watch website, here) and making unsubstantiated claims which are proven wrong. When he was supporting Boris Johnson in his campaign to become the mayor of London, he was caught “sockpuppeting” a cyber-practice where an author of a post poses as someone else and posts comments in support of the post.

How far has he fallen off his mantle of integrity. And how focussed is his obsession in demonising the Muslim minority.

“Jihadist” School Takeover Plot: Tahir Alam Responds

It had recently been reported that a document outlining a “Muslim takeover” of Birmingham schools had been leaked and that the Birmingham City Council was and is currently investigating it. The media capitalised on this perfect opportunity to reinforce and accord the notion of the fifth columner status to the Muslim Minority of Britain.

This is expected from the media, as has been seen in the past. However what really disgusted me were the responses from some Muslims, the armchair holier-than-thou keyboard warriors, hitting to the social media and declaring this an “embarassment” and calling those Muslims who are supposedly behind it, “nutters”.  This despite the BBC report clearly stating,

“We still don’t know whether it’s genuine or a fake”

I do not need to delve into the inherent stupidity of such judgments against fellow Muslims.  Allah Almighty states clearly in the Qur’an,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful. (49:6)

I now refer you to Tahir Alam’s press release concerning the matter.

Refutation of Allegations in ‘Trojan Horse’

PRESS RELEASE 9th March 2014

Over the past week there has been substantial coverage of an alleged Islamic plot to take over state schools in Birmingham via the Academies Programme. This ridiculous assertion is based entirely upon a leaked document nonsensically referred to as ‘Operation Trojan Horse’. This press release is to address the baseless and false assertions that have been made in this anonymous, unsigned and undated document, the authenticity of which any decent and fair-minded person would question and quite quickly conclude as a hoax.
